We had a wonderful WCQG meeting today and a really neat program. Jacque Hencell brought a
trunk show called "If Quilts Could Talk". She was a very good speaker. I just wished her quilt holders would have held her quilts straight and a little longer. Jacque gave us permission to take pictures. She also sells vintage embroidery patterns. I will post pictures of the ones I bought on another post.
Now for my question. I decided to go ahead and post a picture of this project because the one receiving it doesn't know they are receiving it so it's okay. I need your input please. I thought setting these blocks this way was a good idea orignally. This afternoon after laying it out; I'm not so sure. What do you think? Leave it. Use one color. Or change it entirely? This layout will have the focus fabric as an outer border and maybe another smaller inner border if ya'll think it needs it.

ReplyDeleteYou know I don't know the right from wrong way to do things like this unless directions tell me what to do, but I think it looks great like you have it :)
I think it looks good in that layout. I would probably put a narrow border of a solid green or tone on tone print in the same color dark green as is in the focus fabric, and then add a wider border of the focus fabric.
ReplyDeleteI always audition my borders though, so if that doesn't appeal to you after you have the top sewn together and the borders laying next to it, then try a different color as an inner border or no inner border. The quilt will tell you what it wants.
Almost ALWAYS, I put a narrow inner border on many quilts, before I add a wider outer border. Usually, it helps to 'stop' the inner part of the design. I really never know what I'm going to do until I get there. ANd, I must be blind, but I cannot see a difference between the two photos ???? So, if I don't see a difference, maybe you are being hypercritical of your lovely work. These blocks are all really beautiful and clever -- are they all made of 4 images? The 'on point' as you have it, looks a little more 'dressed-up', but frankly, the quilt will be lovely, due to the lovely fabric and your ingenious blocks.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is beautiful...I always like to frame a quilt ...using a color that is different from the block so it does not run into itself...navy possibly...or green cannot tell from the pic if that is green in it. That is my opinion from this view but I would try diffent colors until I got the one that set it off...Maine
